A Sufi Poem about Al-Mahdi’s Illness and Healing
The following verses are from the poem Al-Hawiyya by the Sufi Shaykh Salah al-Din al-Qusi — may Allah have mercy upon him — in which he speaks about the physical illness of Imam al-Mahdi and his healing.
They said, "Tell us about the Mahdi of
Sorrows."
I said, "Someday a group of three and a
surgeon will come to him at once.
They will open his belly and
relieve him of the burden,
And they will purify his intestines
and extract a dark lump of flesh from his one-foot-long intestine,
which is like a bitter tube.
And he will not understand at that
moment and will just fall asleep like a drunkard.
He will think
that he is lost and his imagination will perplex him.
So they
will come to him that day to complete what will uplift his heart,
And
to remove all that his worldly life has left as a trace within
him,
So that he will know nothing of the world except the purity
he has gained.
And Taha [the Prophet Muhammad] has entrusted
them with him and said: 'Bring him to me, even by force' — He who
is drowning, surrounded by enemies, and whose eyes wander from
oppression.
