The Arab Soothsayer Satih Foretells the Arrival of Imam Mahdi

The Description and Arrival of Imam Mahdi

Satih the soothsayer was the most famous of all in the pre-Islamic era. He achieved a level of soothsaying that no one else had, and he was called the master of soothsayers because he could predict the unseen and tell wondrous news. His name was Rabi’ bin Rabi’ah, from the Bani Dhi’b bin Adi. Source: Akhbar Al-Zaman by Al-Masudi.

It was narrated that Dhu Yazan, the king, sent for Satih about a matter that concerned him. When Satih came, the king tried to test his knowledge before passing judgment. So, he hid a dinar under his foot. Then he gave Satih permission to enter. The king asked him, “What have I hidden for you, Satih?” Satih replied, “I swear by the Kaaba, the Sacred Sanctuary, the Black Stone, the night when it darkens, the morning when it smiles, and by every eloquent speaker and every mute person, that you have hidden a dinar for me between your sandal and your foot.” The king asked, “How did you learn this, Satih?” He replied, “From a brother of mine who accompanies me wherever I alight.”

The king said, “Tell me what will happen through the ages.” Satih said, “When the good men are gone and the wicked dominate, fate is denied, wealth becomes hoarded, eyes are humbled before kings, kinship ties are severed, and the cads rise — those who deem what is forbidden permissible and violate the sanctity of Islam. When opinions are divided, the covenant is broken, sanctity is diminished, and the tailed star that will terrify the Arabs rises.

At that time the rains will cease, the rivers will dry up, the weather will change, and prices will soar in all regions. Then the Berbers will come with yellow banners, riding strong mules, until they descend upon Egypt. Then a man from the descendants of Sakhr will emerge, replacing the black banners with red ones, permitting forbidden acts, and hanging women by their breasts. He is the one who will plunder Kufa, and if he passes a woman with her white leg uncovered, riding a horse in a caravan, he would kill her husband, enslave her, and make her his concubine. Then the son of the Prophet, the Mahdi, will appear. That is when the oppressed man and his cousin from Yathrib are killed in the Haram, and the hidden one appears and agrees with al-Washmi, and al-Washmi joins the group of oppressors, and the Romans will invade the Crimeans and kill them. Then an eclipse will occur when armies advance and line up.

Then a king will emerge from Sana'a in Yemen. He will be white as cotton, and his name will be Husain or Hasan, and tribulations will be removed with his emergence. There he will appear, blessed and pure, as a guided guide and a lofty master. He will bring relief to the people when he arrives with the favor of Allah, who guided them. He will dispel the darkness with his light, and with him the truth will come out after it had been hidden.

He will distribute wealth equally among the people and will sheathe the swords so that blood is not shed, and the people will live in joy and happiness. With the water of his justice he will wash the eye of time clean of filth, and he will restore rights to the people of the villages. He will increase hospitality and settlement among the people, and with his justice he will remove misguidance and blindness, as if they were dust that has been dispelled. He will fill the earth with justice and equity, and the days with abundance. This is the knowledge of the Hour, and there is no doubt about it.”
